Liz takes Lane – An intern story
The Lane Agency • 3rd Jun 2025
Once upon a time, in a land far away (West Yorkshire), a young girl dreamed of telling stories for a living. This dream followed her throughout her education and led her to the wonderful world of advertising. After completing a Masters degree in this field, she then faced the harsh reality of finding her happy ever after (a stable, full-time job). Ad land was facing challenges of its own, pushing the keys to the kingdom even further from her grasp. She searched far and wide for an open door, battling through a swarm of other desperate graduates but to no avail. Spending evenings as a tavern bar wench she began to doubt herself and her capabilities. Until one day she saw the light at the end of the tunnel. A bright orange light, accompanied by a Geordie man in cool shoes.
That pretty much sums up my journey to Lane.
Hi, I’m Liz – and this is my intern story.

I graduated at a time where junior jobs were few and far between and the industry that I loved, and so wanted to be a part of, was in a recession. Despite this, my course consisted of over 30 people, all vying to get a job in advertising in Scotland. Intern opportunities were even fewer and farther between and could not keep up with the sheer number of graduates looking for their break in ad land. The LinkedIn job board was a barren and bleak place that I refreshed constantly.

The thing I was best at during my time at university was chatting. I can chat for England (and now Scotland), and this is the best advice I could give someone looking for an internship. I didn’t apply for this internship through a scheme, I landed this opportunity from hard work, dedication and my questionable craic.
Lane has been in my sights since I decided I wanted to be a copywriter. The creativity, company culture and people are unlike anything I’ve experienced in the industry. From my first day to now (three months in), I have been treated with nothing but respect and gratitude for my time. Just a quick warning, the gushing for Lane will continue throughout this blog post.
I started this internship in February and here I am three months later. From hedgehog poo to airports and smoked salmon, I’ve written it all. In this time, I’ve learned almost as much about myself as I have about copywriting. The creative team have honed my skills and nurtured my writing style, making me into the writer I am today. When I started, I didn’t know what a timesheet was, now I’m writing for retainers with my name on the brief. Even writing this article is a reminder of how far I’ve come.

I sent this photo to my mum.
One of the first jobs I did was write some social media captions for a client. I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing them live on Instagram. It’s difficult to explain but seeing that 130ish-character caption pop up on my Instagram feed filled me with so much pride. It really is the small things.
This internship has taught me many things, from how to effectively write for different TOV’s to what to wear in an office in 21-degree heat (spoiler – the answer is not black corduroy trousers). It’s also taught me about my own strength and endurance. For the first two months of this internship, I also worked full-time in a bar. This was a really challenging time, both physically and mentally but now I’m at the other end, I look back in pride that my creativity prevailed.
I am so overwhelmingly grateful to Lane for taking a chance on me, specifically Fletch and Kendra. They saw something in me that I was losing sight of myself. I’ve not only gained professional experience, I’ve gained confidence in myself and my abilities.
It would be easy for me to write a generic post about projects I’ve worked on and skills I’ve gained but this internship has been so much more to me. This opportunity proved to me that there is a place for me in the advertising industry, something which the many job rejections caused me to doubt. Lane carved this place out for me and helped me get my foot in the door, an action that sums them up as a company perfectly.
It’s hard to have a voice as a graduate, especially in today’s job climate. It’s really easy to settle for less than your worth. Lane have demonstrated their dedication to future creatives time and time again, giving voices to people who are often told they are too inexperienced to have one.
Before this internship I was worried that copywriting was a dying art, but the past 3 months has proven to me that it’s not, and it’s agencies like Lane, and creatives like Fletch and Kendra, who are keeping it alive.

To graduates – hold onto your creativity and nurture your connections, your time will come.
To agencies – and the people working at them, take a chance on an intern (allow them to write a social caption – they’ll never forget it).
To Fletch, Kendra, and the wonderful people at Lane – thank you. I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity, and I’ll forever have heaps of random knowledge about things like hedgehog poo.
Love from Liz.
