A fresh crew for Edinburgh’s favourite pilot

Brand Creative

EDI the Pilot needed a bit of company. So, we created a high-flying team to guide families through the airport terminal.

Insight

For nearly a decade, Edinburgh Airport’s friendly mascot, EDI the Pilot, had been flying solo as he guided passengers through the terminal. But he was starting to show his age. Static, lonely and a bit old fashioned, EDI no longer reflected the dynamic, inclusive experience that the airport wanted to offer families and young travellers.

Reaching out to Lane, Edinburgh Airport asked us to evolve the beloved character into something more – a livelier, more diverse crew that would help provide more creative storytelling and better engage young audiences across kids’ zones, signage and wayfinding.

Idea

Partnering with the illustration pros at Windle Design, and after a number of moodboards, sketches and a few style tweaks, the characters came to life. The bold, bright and charming style felt fresh, but still familiar.

Alongside a refreshed EDI, we welcomed SKY, ACE and FLO – a high-flying team with nods to air travel and representing various roles within the airport. No longer alone, he now had company who also help guide families through the terminal. From towering floor-to-ceiling vinyls, starring roles in play areas, photo opportunities and even newly-branded activity sheets.

Impact

The new-look EDI and his expanded crew have landed with impact, transforming the airport experience into something brighter, bolder and far more memorable – especially for the littlest travellers. What was once a lone mascot is now a dynamic cast woven into the fabric of the terminal, adding character to check-ins, charm to play zones and a whole lot of joy to the journey.

It’s a confident reflection of today’s Edinburgh airport – modern, family-friendly and proudly innovative.
